The Great Fen Visitors Centre competition - The Fens, UK

The new Great Fen visitors centre is seen as a new ‘ship of the fens’, a centre for the Great Fen vision floating above the restored fenland landscape. The approach is to create a building that complements its expansive setting rather than competes with the scale of the landscape. Linear in form and raised above the landscape the building is to be distinct in its dramatic simplicity.

Orientated to provide an initial focus to the first phase of restoration to the south, the building is to be sited within the demise of the existing New Decoy farm buildings. It is seen as a dark mass on the horizon, its distinction providing a visual reference point within the landscape. This resilient language of the exterior is inverted to provide a warm interior through the use of locally sourced timber cladding.

The new visitors centre will provide an inspirational environment, providing a learning resource for the surrounding landscape and a memorable destination for enjoyment and relaxation.
