Salterns Lane - Hampshire, UK

The project is a two storey coastal house on the shores of the Solent in Hampshire. The brief was to design an extremely economical property that is highly sustainable and could be subdivided at a later date into a smaller house and separate flat. The house is orientated on a north/ south axis and adopts a series of pitched roofs in response to adjacent buildings. The amplitude of each pitch reduces to the east where the neighbouring properties are lower.

The house is raised on a rough cast concrete plinth so that it sits above the flood risk level. Access is via a light weight timber ramp to a recessed portico from where one enters the double height main hall. From here the house is arranged so that the private bedrooms are placed at ground floor with access directly onto the garden. At the upper level the living accommodation and a spare bedroom/ office benefit from distant views over the Solent with the main living room stretching from the north to south facades to make use of both the views to the north and movement of the sun to the south.

Externally the building is clad in vertically orientated timber boarding with flush triple glazed windows and a pre-patinated dark grey standing seam zinc roof. Internally the timber floors continue the grid of the external weatherboarding with white plastered walls and ceilings enhancing the reflected light from the Solent.
